Description:

Abstract:

A geospatial analysis to determine where conditions are favorable for living shoreline creation was performed for public lands in coastal Virginia. The analysis imported data from the CCRM Shoreline Management Model (SMM) which identifies where conditions are suitable for living shorelines as an erosion control treatment based on site conditions. Site conditions are determined from various external digital databases that include the CCRM Virginia Shoreline Inventory, as well as others. Only living shoreline treatment options that occur along the shoreline were considered in the analysis. These options could include: maintain conditions/no action necessary, fiber logs, oysters, marsh planting, marsh planting with sills, beach nourishment, and breakwaters. Options for maintaining and enhancing the riparian upland are assumed.The model output was superimposed with a delineation of public lands in the coastal zone of Virginia that occur along tidal shoreline. These data are maintained and provided by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in shape file format. The dataset includes conservation easements, and public land holdings at the federal, state, and local jurisdictions.

The terms "Public Lands", "Conservation lands", and "Protected Lands" are used interchangeably in this project. All conservation lands and easements (public and private) where considered for this dataset. The driving force for inclusion was adjacency to tidal shoreline and living shoreline treatment recommendations.

Completeness_Report:

Living shoreline treatment options and conservation lands/easements that co-occur are presented in this dataset. Conservation lands/easements polygons retain original attributes as well as empty living shoreline treatment attributes (County, invPubYr, LS_BMP, and LS_Def). The attributes are populated in the merged living shoreline polygons. Three localities (Arlington, King & Queen, and King William) are not included in the analysis. At the time of publication the Shoreline Management Model (SMM) had not been run on these localities.

Preserve existing wide sand beach if present, allow for dynamic sand movement for protection; nourish the beach by placing good quality sand along the beach shoreline that is similar to the native sand. Use offshore breakwaters with beach nourishment only where additional protection is necessary. These are a series of large rock structures placed strategically offshore to maintain stable pocket beaches between the structures. The wide beaches provide most of the protection, so beach nourishment should be included; periodic beach re-nourishment may be needed. The site-specific suitability for offshore breakwaters with beach nourishment must be determined, seek expert advice.
