<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><P><SPAN>This data layer contains polygon representations of National Priority List ("Superfund") sites throughout US EPA Region 3. Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA, also known as "Superfund") in response to a growing national concern about the release of hazardous substances from abandoned waste sites. The term “boundary” should be used with caution as it could be interpreted several different ways. The polygons in this file could be property boundaries where the area of contamination is somewhere within the property but not completely encompassing it. They could be “best guess” limits of actual contamination, they could be limits of where remediation work is actually occurring, or several other definitions. For this sort of detail it is best to contact the project manager assigned to the individual facility.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV>
This polygon boundary data layer is intended to display all of the sites on the National Priority List in US EPA Region 3, also known as Superfund Sites.

These NPL Superfund Boundaries have come from a variety of sources: 1. Digitized in Google Earth by US EPA Region 3 Hazardous Site Clean up Division (HSCD). Various types of paper maps that contained the site boundary were used as guides as an electronic boundary was captured in Google Earth. 2. Some of these boundaries were electronically captured in the 1990’s by the US EPA Region 3 GIS Team. Again various types of paper maps that contained a site boundary were used as a guide and the NPL boundary was electronically captured using AutoCAD. 3. Other boundaries have been electronically captured and delineated using ArcMap. Various paper maps and other sources were provided by HSCD Federal Facilites Branch, and used as guides as an electronic boundary was captured by members of the Region 3 GIS Team. 4. Various site boundaries were checked and verified by using the data layer provided by ATSDR. (The US Department of Health and Human Services, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry)
