<edom>
<edomv>Scrub-Shrub</edomv>
<edomvd>Scrub-shrub is a land use class that includes small trees, shrubs, and bushy plants. This land use is easily distinguished during remote sensing compared to "forested" and "grass".</edomvd>
<edomvds>VIMS Shoreline & Tidal Marsh Inventory Glossary, Center for Coastal Resources Management</edomvds>

<edom>
<edomv>Grass</edomv>
<edomvd>Grasslands include large unmanaged fields, managed grasslands adjacent to large estates, agriculture tracts reserved for pasture, and grazing. While a general rule of thumb will classify a tract as “grass” if a home sits behind a large tract of grass, a designation of “residential” may be made if there are similar tracts adjacent to each other. This designation can be determined using best professional judgment.</edomvd>

<attrdef>Beaches are persistent sandy shores that are visible during high tides. These features can be wide or thin lenses of sand. Beaches are coded as linear features at the wet/dry line to portray their location only. If a beach does not have a visible wet/dry line, then the line feature is located at the seaward edge of the beach. ‘Wide’ beaches have at least 10 feet of dry sand persistently visible above high tides. Beach features coded along tidal marsh shorelines are persistent, sandy features located on the water side of tidal marsh vegetation. Sand washed into tidal marshes is not coded as a beach if the marsh vegetation &/or marsh edge is still clearly visible. This classification of beaches along tidal marsh shorelines can include professional judgment.</attrdef>

<idPurp>To inventory Maryland's tidal shoreline conditions.</idPurp>
<idAbs>

The shoreline inventory files have been generated to support the application of the Maryland Shoreline Stabilization Model (SSM), developed by the Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM), Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), to enhance and streamline regulatory decision making in Maryland. This shoreline inventory includes the features needed as inputs to run the LSSM.

The data developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions by using observations made remotely at the desktop using high resolution imagery (most recent MD Six Inch Imagery at time of inventory) . The three-tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, and natural protection (i.e., marshes and beaches); and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.

</idAbs>

<stepDesc>All processing steps for the shoreline inventory were generated using ArcGIS - ArcMap v10.6.1 or ArcPro v3.0.3 while viewing conditions observed on MD_SixInchImagery and Google Earth Pro (checking dates from 1994 to 2023). For the land use/bank cover shapefile, arcs were split and coded for land use, bank height, bank cover, tree fringe, and presence or absence of sandspit , marsh and beach. For the access structure shapefile, points were placed where structures (dock, dilapidated dock, boathouse, public ramp, and private ramp) are located on the shoreline. For the shoreline structure shapefile, arcs were coded for bulkhead, dilapidated bulkhead, riprap, unconventional, debris, wharf, breakwater, groinfield, jetty, marsh toe revetment, and marina >50 slips and <50 slips.</stepDesc>
