<idPurp>To maintain and update an inventory of the distribution of tidal marshes for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
</idPurp>
<idAbs>

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science published the first Tidal marsh Inventories using data collected in the early 1970's. Using high resolution color infra-red imagery from 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017 new Tidal Marsh Inventories have been developed beginning in 2010. Marsh boundaries were generated using heads-up digitizing techniques at a scale of 1:1,000. From 2010 through 2014 marsh polygons were classified by morphologic type: fringe, extensive, embayed, or marsh island. Beginning in 2015, morphologic classification was discontinued. Marshes were ground-truthed in the field where a community type index was assigned to each marsh based on plant community make-up.

</idAbs>

<stepDesc>Field collection of marsh data was performed primarily from a small shallow-draft vessel, navigating at slow speeds parallel to the shoreline. Surveys extended as far upstream as depth and field conditions allowed. Some additional data collection was performed by land where marshes were easily accessible from public lands. During surveys, marsh boundaries were verified, and wetland plant species observed within each marsh polygon were recorded along with relative cover estimates to determine marsh community types.

<attrdef>Tidal marshes take on several different morphologies. They can be embayed features that are set into the landscape with upland areas along the marsh edges. They can also be large extensive features that extend into the open water and have water on two or three sides. Fringe marshes grow nearly parallel to the shoreline and can be wide or narrow. An isolated marsh surrounded on all sides by open water; interior portions of the marsh may contain trees scattered at highest elevations In all cases, wetland vegetation must be relatively well established, although not necessarily healthy.</attrdef>

<overview>
<eaover>Five shape files combine to complete the Shoreline Inventory. The complete set includes va_lubc, va_astru, va_sstru, va_beaches, and va_TMI. The va_lubc (land use and bank cover) file is a linear shape file containing data about land use, tree fringe, bank height, bank cover, bank stability and beach status along the shoreline. Va_astru (access structure shape file) is a point shape file with locations of docks, dilapidated docks, boathouses, and private and public boat ramps. Va_sstru (shoreline structures) is a linear shape file delineating hard structures in place at the shoreline (bulkhead, dilapidated bulkhead, riprap, wharf, unconventional, debris, marina < 50 slips, marina > 50 slips, jetty, marsh toe revetment, groinfield and breakwaters). Va_beach is a linear shapefile showing the presence of beaches on the shoreline. As of 2016, beaches are digitized as a separate file and are no longer included in the _lubc shapefile. Va_TMI (tidal marsh inventory) shows the location, size, and community type of tidal marshes.
These shape files will be modified yearly with the addition of updated locality inventories. The PubYear field denotes the publication year of the county inventory. The jurisdiction is listed in the County field. Digital shoreline inventories began in 1998. Over the years, the methodology for collecting the data, as well as what data is collected has changed. For detailed information on a particular county, please visit the Shoreline & Tidal Marsh Inventory web site at https://www.vims.edu/ccrm/research/inventory/index.php.
