<idAbs>

The Virginia Shoreline Inventory is a series of reports and data that describe the condition of tidal shorelines for individual localities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This inventory series started with historic reports produced in the 1970’s. It also includes contemporary digital inventory updates generated from 1998 to the present using a combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and remote sensing technology.

One of the conditions described in the inventories is the distribution of structures that are used for recreational activities (i.e., Private Boat Ramps, public Boat Ramps, Community Docks, Docks/Piers, Dilapidated Docks/Piers, Jetty, Marinas greater/less than 50 slips, and Wharfs. In addition to this, the spatial extent of marinas, wharfs and jetties is also described in this inventory.

</idAbs>

Large docks within marinas will be digitized as docks (point features), however small finger piers will not be coded. An erosion control infrastructure associated with the marina (e.g. bulkhead, riprap, etc.) will be coded as a line feature in the shoreline structures. Boat ramps will be coded as private. <overview>
<eaover> The Recreational Structures (access structures) is a point feature class with locations of docks, ramps, dilapidated docks, jetties, community docks, and wharfs. The attributes of the shapefile is explained in the Entity and Attribute Information section below. Prior to 2012 the method of collecting data for the shoreline inventory was different. Prior to 2016, beach was included in the lubc shapefile. Prior to 2024 boathouses were included in the access structure shapefile. In 2025 the primary methodology of collection was through remote sensing. These shape files will be modified yearly with the addition of updated locality inventories. The PubYear field denotes the publication year of the county inventory. The jurisdiction is listed in the County field. Digital shoreline inventories began in 1998. Over the years, the methodology for collecting the data, as well as what data is collected has changed. For detailed information on a particular county, please visit the GIS Data and Maps: Shoreline Inventories web site at https://www.vims.edu/ccrm/research/inventory/virginia/</eaover>

<statement>All processing steps for the shoreline inventory were generated using ArcGIS Pro 3.4.x while viewing conditions observed using Google Earth Pro checking dates from 1985-2025 as well as imagery from Bing Maps and 2021 Imagery from the Virginia Basemap Program (VBMP) at a scale of 1:1000. Recreational structures were first generated using Machine Learning Techniques to develop line features. These line features were then corrected manually by reviewing the features and fixing any errors such as false positives and false negatives. The line features were then changed to point features by calculating and placing a point the centroid of the geometry. All point features (docks, ramps) and all line features (marinas, jetties, wharfs) are verified manually and then buffered to .5m (lines) and 1m (points) then combined into a final shapefile of polygons.</statement>
