This inventory series started with historic reports produced in the 1970’s. It also includes contemporary digital inventory updates generated from 1998 to the present using a combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and remote sensing technology.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;One of the conditions described in the inventories is the distribution of beaches and dunes.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>

<stepDesc>All processing steps for the shoreline inventory were generated using ArcGIS Pro 3.4.x while viewing conditions observed in the 2021 Imagery from the Virginia Basemap Program (VBMP) at a scale of 1:1000. Where available, imagery from VIMS Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) surveys (2022 - 2025) were consulted. Conditions were also verified using Google Earth Pro (2011-2025), Google Maps Street View, Bing Maps, and 2017 Imagery from the Virginia Basemap Program (VBMP). Beaches and dunes are delineated as polygons. The backside of the beach or dune is adjacent to the shoreline inventory upland shoreline and the water edge of the beach abuts the shoreline inventory water shoreline.

<attrdef>Determines whether the shoreline is a beach or a dune.
Beaches are persistent sandy shores that are visible during high tides.  These features can be wide or narrow. Beaches are coded as polygons with the water edge aligning with the water shoreline and the back edge aligning with the upland shoreline, tidal marsh edge, or the edge of the dune. Beach features coded along tidal marsh shorelines are persistent, sandy features located on the water side of tidal marsh vegetation.  Sand washed into tidal marshes is not coded as a beach if the marsh vegetation &amp;/or marsh edge is still clearly visible.  This classification of beaches along tidal marsh shorelines can include professional judgment. Dunes are mounded accumulation of sandy soil at a higher elevation and grade than the beach. Dunes are generally located on the landward side of beaches and occasionally vegetated marshes.
