Biennially, DEQ must produce a Water Quality Assessment Integrated Report (IR) on the surface waters within the state’s jurisdiction as mandated by the Clean Water Act (CWA) sections 303(d), 305(b), and 314 and the state’s Water Quality Monitoring, Information, and Restoration Act (WQMIRA). This geographic layer is a component of the process to produce the statistics and maps shown in the IR. Data from DEQ and non-DEQ contributors collected from Jan. 1 2015 through Dec. 31 2020 was used to characterize each applicable Assessment Unit (AU) within the Commonwealth.
<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>Display and define all surface waters of the commonwealth identified within the 2022 305(b)/303(d) Water Quality Assessment Integrated Report. The Assessment Unit (AU) dataset was created from United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) high-resolution 1:24,000 data extracted in September 2012. The NHD product was used by DEQ regional assessment staff to assign previously established assessment unit IDs based on predetermined up- and downstream extents and applicable Water Quality Standards. Some erroneous waters were removed and a few waters were corrected for spatial accuracy using Virginia Base Mapping Program aerial photography from Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN), and recent NHD data where available.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

Any errors or omissions are unintentional and should be brought to the attention of the data point of contact or distributor.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
The assessment unit (AU) hydrology data was edited in a versioned environment on DEQ’s GIS server and synced to the server by each regional editor at the completion of all editing and attribution updates. Once all features were posted to the server the data was processed via Data Reviewer to correct or remove as many topology and attribution errors as possible, if necessary. A flat file was exported of the attributes to validate against the records in CEDS WQA. The processed GIS data was then posted back to the server and exported via ArcCatalog to a local feature dataset for further processing. The details from the assessment database were compiled per unique AU identifier (AU ID / ID305B) and joined to each AU ID in the GIS feature class. Questions regarding the processing of the AU hydrology data should be directed to the data’s point of contact.
Reviewed AU data for each region as data was submitted over the course of months between August 2021 and August 2022. Per the results of regional input during the draft public comment period (July 4 - Aug 5, 2022), records were updated where necessary.
